Advent

In ancient times, the Romans would look forward to the coming of their emperor, their king. This time of preparation for his coming was called his advent. It literally means "coming" or "arrival". One of those emperors, Augustus, even had advent coins minted that declared himself son of god. He was going to usher in a golden age of peace and they called him the savior of the world. His subjects went to great pains to prepare for and celebrate his arrival.

As we begin our traditional period of advent today, may we prepare our hearts for this celebration marking the coming of our King. He is true King - King of the universe and Savior of the world. This is a time of reflection, of looking back at what He has done. But is also a time of anticipation – of eagerly looking forward to His coming.

Take some time during this advent season to reflect, to prepare, and with childlike excitement, watch for His coming.
