Broken Cisterns

In the desert culture of Israel, living water is a source of, well, life. The alternative to living water is water that is collected – like rain run off that flows into a cistern. It would eventually become lukewarm and dirty.

God not only provides living water, He refers to Himself as living water.

“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken Me,
the spring of living water,
and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water."          Jeremiah 2:13

The contrast between what God provides and what we attempt to do on our own is stark. When we seek to fulfill our desires by our own hand it is not only unsatisfying, it is disastrous.

I dig broken cisterns in many areas of my life, trying to do it on my own without realizing I turn my back on a God who supplies abundantly. I run out of myself – my energy, my time, my blessings, my very life – as it seeps away through the cracks. My efforts are completely inadequate outside of Him. The harder I hold on and try it myself, the more cracks develop and the less I have – and the less I have to give. God is faithful to provide a refreshing, life-sustaining spring of life. See you at the fountain!

"For with You is the fountain of life."      Psalm 36:9
