Just an (extra) ordinary night

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.

It was a night like any other. The shepherds were where they were supposed to be, faithfully doing their job.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them…

This night just became anything BUT ordinary as God intervened. An angel appeared and he brought good news. The Messiah was here!

The shepherds were low in the social order. If you were in charge of a marketing campaign, they would not be your initial target audience. These were kids and un-influential laborers. But God chose the least to share in His joy and spread the good news.

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

When confronted by this unexpected announcement, they immediately went to see what God was doing. Imagine their amazement! They couldn’t help but share what they saw and heard.

What I learned from those young shepherds:

BE WHERE I'M SUPPOSED TO BE, even if it feels mundane and ordinary. God may have a surprise planned for me. Imagine if one of those shepherds had skipped their job that night!

JOIN HIM. Drop everything and join in what He’s doing. When I see Him at work, I want to rush into His presence and participate.

TELL OTHERS. God has given me (has given us!) a message of life and hope. No matter who you are, if you have an encounter with God, He’s given you a story to tell.

“Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
