Uncaptured

As we discuss God and what He has revealed about Himself in the conversations of this blog, it is a great reminder that He is “other.” His essence is so glorious that, though He draws near, we will never capture a picture of Him fully.

In the words of Abraham Heschel, from his book God in Search of Man: A Philosophy of Judaism:

“However subtle and noble our concepts may be, as soon as they become descriptive, namely, definite, they confine Him and force Him into the triteness of our minds.”

This author packs so much in every sentence that it forces me to slowly digest his books barely a page at a sitting. His great reverence for scripture and God flow through the pages and challenge the mind as well as the soul.

What a profound thought- the moment you put Him into words, you have made Him too small. I think I need to read that book.

In Exodus 33:19 we see God conceal and reveal himself, intentionally using his own hand to protect Moses from seeing his face, showing Moses only his back as his glory passes by. I have read that passage over and over with wonder at what Moses saw and heard at that moment.

Although in moments frustrating, I am ultimately thankful that I have a God whom I cannot fully understand or explain using my own human lens or words. I'm comforted by the fact that he shows me what I need to see and reveals to me only what he knows I can handle at a given time. When I'm tired of my limitations and frustrated by my own sin...I'm so glad he is "other", and able to carry me where I fail.
