What’s your story?

What is God doing in your life right now? What has He done in the past? I know that sometimes we can’t see until we are much further down the road, but a friend of mine can usually answer that question without a pause. I love that she is constantly aware and reflecting on God’s work and goodness. It challenges and encourages me to do the same.

If I am paying attention, I will see His work along the way. If I tell someone about it, it reinforces the experience and also gives me an opportunity for encouraging someone else. The story may even still be in process. That can be a scary time to share but it is also a way to declare His faithfulness along the way. How did you see God’s character revealed today? What is He teaching you and where did you see Him at work in your world?

My church has a time carved out during the week called Story Time. The staff and volunteers can gather and hear from a few people what God is doing. That’s a valuable way to encourage and strengthen the community.

Story is powerful. The Bible is full of truth conveyed through story. Jesus, on healing the demoniac, promptly told him to go share his story with others. Tell them what God did for you and how He had mercy on you.

God is teaching me about living in the moment, experiencing His presence right now and not in pursuit of what is coming. Once I’ve recognized His hand, I begin to see the lesson over and over in various circumstances. God loves me right now and that’s all I need.

It’s important for us to recall God’s goodness. It’s important for others to hear. And it’s important for the next generations. I love hearing stories of God’s work in those who have come before, especially if I’m connected to them.

Tell your kids how God blessed you today. Tell your grandkids the story of how He provided for your family. Share about the season the Spirit brought you comfort beyond understanding or led you through a difficult time. Let the experience of God’s faithfulness pass to others, pass to the next generation, even if the story is still developing. It will encourage, comfort and strengthen those who hear.

“Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled. Mark 5:19-20

  1. Each of us has such a sacred story. Each day, "How can I look for good, point to God, then repeat?" Stories come in all sizes... will all kinds of twists and turns. Our story is never over. Thanks for the reminder, Jen...
  2. I have friends also who are quick to sense and share what God is doing in their life or teaching them on any given day. Some even have a Word (e.g., faithful, rest, redeemed, etc.) that they feel God has given them that summarizes what He's teaching or showing them in that season. I love that too, and have been challenged to be so intentional with God that I have a response of my own.
