And every tithe of herds and flocks, every tenth animal of all that pass under the herdsman's staff, shall be holy to the Lord. Leviticus 27:32
I don’t have herds and flocks to present as an offering to God. Our economy looks different today. So what does that aspect of worship look like?
When I began working, I would bring home a check representing what I earned. I would deposit it and then split it up – tithing, housing, food, …you get the idea. But then my earnings began being deposited automatically. Although individual online payment options were tempting, I chose to write out a check to church. It made me think about what I was doing and why. Now I can have my tithe sent automatically every month. But I wonder if this is too easy. Once the initial decision is made, I don’t really have a part in it. And I want to. In fact, I feel like I need to.
I realize the point is to give and that God knows our heart. There are no right answers – only obedience to Him where He has us right now. Are automatic payments a sign of trust that payments are going to happen regardless? Or is it a matter of out of sight out of mind, and whatever is left belongs to me?
In this season, I’m choosing to honor God by making an intentional monthly act. I need the reminder. It’s all His, and I want to acknowledge that continually.
