Sitting on my patio studying, I enjoy a nice breeze and look about. Since this is so often the place I write or read, many of my writings reflect my garden, cycle of life or some other outside wonder. The environment fills my mind and therefore affects my words.
Surely this is true in other areas of life. What is before me, what I see, is what fills my thoughts, intentionally or not. And it will eventually affect my thinking, attitude, and even actions. It affects my soul.
What am I choosing to put before my eyes? What am I surrounding myself with? A movie or show that elevates goodness and truth? Or something that pulls my mind in another direction. Hours of news? Or scripture and song?
I want to be more mindful of what I set before my eyes and ears. I’m going to begin by asking myself repeatedly, is this helping my soul or hurting it? In the bustle of a day I sometimes go the path of least resistance. One change I’m making is pre-programming stations for uplifting music and Christian talk instead of so many news channels. I want to make it easier to guard my heart. I know it will reap what I sow.
What is a change you will make?
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8
