I tend to feel in control and self-reliant - until I’m not. Yes, I give mental assent to God being in control of all things but it is amazing how often I don’t live like it. I like the feeling of being in control.
Right now, many are being faced with the reality that, in fact, they’re not in control. Patterns are off and things can be scary. We are in situations we would change if we could. It might seem like the government is in control - or the doctors. But however well intended, we know they have frailties.
Feeling out of control is a great impetus to be reminded that there is One who actually is in control. Even His name proclaims His sovereignty - El Elyon, Most High God.
El Elyon is above and over all things. He is above the chaos, above the confusion. While much is not in my control, everything is under His authority and power. As Creator of the Universe, He isn’t affected by circumstances but rather affects them. I can only be humbled before Him as my wispy false illusions of power and control evaporate before the Almighty.
But what a comfort that is – especially when I’ve already accepted my own lack of control. It brings peace to know that there is One in control - One who is good and loving. And remarkably – though He is MOST HIGH of all – One who came low to comfort us.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1
