The Jewish tradition of blessings has one for almost every imaginable occasion. The Shehecheyanu is the blessing for firsts. Traditionally it is used for first occasions after the start of a new year. It can also be for a first of a religious occasion.
Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, shehecheyanu, v’kiy’manu, v’higiyanu laz’man hazeh.
Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of all, who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this season.
We may have suffered the loss of others, but He has kept us alive. They have entered rest, but we are still here. We are present right now in this moment only because He has brought us to this season. He has a purpose.
In that respect, the Shehecheyanu can be used at any time. It is a blessing for firsts, a blessing for moments. This moment is different than all others, regardless of what came before, and so it is a first.
I like this reminder. I need this reminder. Time is a precious commodity - every moment a gift not to be wasted. It is a reminder of the newness of each minute of every day.
Whether it is a new year, a new day or a new experience, I want to live in the awe and wonder that He has purposefully brought me to this place.
Lord, keep pointing me back to You, reminding me of Your Presence. Help me to realize time for the treasure it is and bring You glory upon arriving at this place.
And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:13
