Merriam-Webster defines hospitality as “generous and friendly treatment of visitors and guests.” Others mention kindness and generosity and a “bringing in.” In ancient times, hospitality was an expectation – both a duty and a right – as shelter could be lifesaving. Its echoes are seen in many eastern cultures today. To be brought in to someone’s home was to come not only under their provision but their protection.
God shows us the ultimate hospitality. He takes us, as strangers (literally estranged), and welcomes us in. He treats us with kindness, love and generosity though we have done nothing to deserve it. He offers protection and provides for us. We only have to accept the offer to come to Him. His generosity is so immense, He invites us into the family; no longer as guests or even friends, but now as heirs.
I am grateful for God’s hospitality toward me. I want to be like Him, to reflect His goodness and generosity, and learn to be welcoming as He has shown me.
Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Isaiah 59:7
