Lord’s Prayer: Yours is the Kingdom

… for Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Matthew 6:14

Some translations include this phrase while others do not, because it is not included in the earliest manuscripts that are translated. In any case, it is consistent with the rest of our text and makes a nice doxology as we complete our prayer.

All the things we just prayed for - daily bread, forgiveness, protection - we do so with confidence because of Him. The Kingdom is His and He is the King. All authority comes from Him. He has the power to carry out that authority. There is no power like His. And He deserves, and will ultimately receive, all glory.

When we include this piece, the prayer ends as it started – pointing to God. Looking at the totality of the Lord’s Prayer, I like this reminder as I pray. Acknowledging God, bringing my needs to Him, acknowledging my dependance on Him, and closing with my submission and acknowledgment of Him once again.

Lord, the Kingdom, the power and the glory are all yours. Thank you for hearing my prayer.
