The Words of Jesus: the Psalms

I love the intricate intertwining of the old and new testaments. The consistency of the Author through the various messengers brings cohesion and beauty to His Word. ALL scripture is inspired by God.

The Psalms are quoted directly in the NT more than any other text. There are over 100 citations and even more allusions to the ancient writings. In fact, every NT writer uses the Psalms to point to Jesus’ identity at some point. Jesus Himself quotes the Psalms more than any other text (followed by Deuteronomy and Isaiah.)

I sometimes think of the Psalms merely as songs or passages of encouragement and promise. But, in fact, they carry great truth and if Jesus chose to recall them so frequently in His teaching, it spurs in me a desire to know them better.

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
    His love endures forever.
Psalm 118:1
