The Bible uses the imagery of fragrances and, like all our senses, we can connect to God through the sense of smell. In Exodus 30 we see the recipe for the priestly anointing oil. It would give off a unique scent that would be identified with the holy men that served before God. When that smell came near, it was a reminder of the presence of God.
Leviticus records many instances where sacrifices were presented and became a pleasing aroma to God. Acts of obedience, the burning sacrifices were also an aromatic reminder to the people and would draw their attention to God. I think obedience can be linked to the smell of cooking meat, at least as a reminder.
The altar of incense also gave a sweet fragrance to God and our prayers are pictured in the same way rising up to God.
I don’t have the fragrances of ancient rituals to remind me of God, but I can still engage all the senses He gave me. Sweet fragrances, pleasant aromas…let everything point to Him.
Are there scents that remind you of God?
And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.” Ephesians 5:1-2.
