But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16
What are you pursuing? What do you aspire to do or be? God told us clearly that we are to be holy. Holiness means to be set apart, sanctified. In other words, like Him.
We are at the same time declared to be holy - and told to be holy. The work of Christ separates me to God, it makes my position holy before Him. But I am also to conduct myself (internally and externally) in a holy manner. As a family member, I now represent a Holy God, so I my life should represent Him faithfully.
But though I’m redeemed, made holy, I’m still a sinner! How am I to do this?
I will resolve to pursue Christ. Set my mind to be holy. This isn’t a wishy-washy resolution, but a heartfelt commitment to be like Him. I must be single mindedly focused on seeking Christ and walking in obedience.
No matter my efforts, the pursuit of holiness is only achieved by the Holy Spirit. He gives the desire to be holy and the power to walk in His ways. As I linger in His presence, the holiness that begins to become evident will only hint at the holiness that He has declared of me.
I’m going to pursue being what God has declared me to be. This is scary to say aloud for I know I will fall short, but I’m going to pursue holiness - a life of joy and peace - because He told me to. My prize is life with Him.
Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14
