Best for last

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

Did you do your homework before going out to play? That pattern still resonates with me - work first, play later. It is difficult for me to relax and enjoy some time if I haven’t been diligent with the tasks at hand. And the harder the work is, the more satisfying the rest feels. The best comes at the end.

The same pattern is in God’s creation. Work for six days and then rest. He didn’t say rest up on day one so you’d be ready for the week to come. The rest follows the work. And the Sabbath points to an amazing rest that is coming.

I like to save my favorites for last – like the best bite on a plate or a special present that was set aside. I’m looking forward to that rest the Lord is preparing. Toil and hardship will be over and we will feast, fellowship and be at peace. A dear friend had a hard life, but she is enjoying the feast now. It must taste particularly sweet as she enjoys her Savior. What it must be like to just sit with Jesus! This reminds me to stay diligent to the mission here and remember the Sabbath to come. The struggles will slip out of memory as the joy in His rest begins. The best is surely coming last.

And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” Revelation 19:9
