Emmanuel

It’s incomprehensible. God left heaven. For here. He gave up glory and majesty, omnipotence and omniscience. And subjected Himself to the limitations of a body and an earthly life within time. Yes, He was still fully God. But He emptied Himself for us. Almighty God, King of kings and Lord of lords. And now He gets cold. And tired. He subjects Himself to the care of a young mother to fulfill His every physical need. If she doesn’t feed Him – He starves. And He feels pain. Such pain. As an adult, He subjects Himself to physical torture that doesn’t even come near the spiritual pain He endured at the cross – for us. He knows loneliness, betrayal, and sorrow. He weeps at the loss of a loved one. He enjoys a meal with friends.

This is our God, a loving and relational God who has experienced the same temptations and pain that we have. Because He chose to. He reached out to us to touch us – in a very physical way.

This is what we remember at Christmas. Emmanuel. God with us. God with us. There is no God like our God - who loves us and came to be with us. Emmanuel.
