Our Bible records some tragic events – wars, betrayal, loss of loved ones, illness – all things we experience today. When we read and remember that these are real people, we can empathize with those shared sufferings. We can relate to the emotions they must have felt; sadness, anger, and grief.
Sometimes others tell us not to feel those so-called negative emotions. Sometimes we say it to ourselves. And yet God never once says “don’t feel that way.”
God said, "I am with you."
When Mary sobbed at Jesus' tomb, He merely uttered her name, a comforting sound. Jesus constantly reminds people of His love. He didn’t say get over it, He wept with them. He didn’t say toughen up, He said, “I am with you.”
The Spirit came to us as a Comforter and Guide. He is with us. He understands and gives us hope. And yes, He strengthens us to move forward.
I’m grateful that God sits with us in our pain. He feels it with us. And while He never rebukes us for what we feel, He does gently help move us through it if we let Him.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
