First Day of Advent

As a child, Sunday nights in December meant Advent devotions. The tradition pointed our hearts to the true reason for the Christmas holiday and sticks with me to this day as a meaningful and worthwhile tradition. My brother and I would take turns reading (after fighting to see who would light the candle) as our family went through the well-worn liturgy.

I would encourage you to take time with your children, and those around you, to develop your own traditions during this advent season of Christmas preparation. Find a weekly (or daily) devotion you can do together. Recall God’s story. Tell the story of God’s faithfulness in your life. In a season that is busy and full of distractions, the gift of your time and undivided attention is precious. Give generously to God, who waits patiently for us, and to your family as well. Stop, reflect and remember. God is with us.

Do you have an Advent tradition to share?

Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us). Matthew 1:23
