“Come, follow me.”
If you heard this, what would you do? Peter and Andrew dropped their nets and followed. My first instinct would be, “where are we going?” And then I’d probably want to know what we’d be doing and for how long.
The way the disciples immediately followed showed that they knew Who was calling them. It didn’t matter where or when or what – the only thing that mattered was the character of the One in front.
God rarely gives us a detailed roadmap of what’s ahead. Rabbis know this struggle and so have a habit of leading their disciples without giving them all the information. It becomes a picture of how we follow God. It builds the trust muscle. RVL gives us a snapshot of that as we trek across Israel. We don’t know where we are headed but he’s coached us on the right shoes and the verses to memorize. He knows the destination and will teach us along the way.
How does that translate as a follower of Jesus? Do I second guess and want to know where we’re headed? Do I demand to see the finish line before I move in a new direction? Or do I trust in where we’re going and that He has prepared me with everything I will need on the way?
I’m not expected to follow blindly. I know Who it is I follow and want to be with Him no matter the where or what. The more I know His character, the easier it is. I want to follow with all my heart, even not knowing what lies ahead.
… and Matthew got up and followed Him. Matthew 9:9
