God, My Sustainer

Even to your old age and gray hairs
    I am He, I am He who will sustain you.
I have made you and I will carry you;
    I will sustain you and I will rescue you
.  Isaiah 46:4

God promises to be our sustainer – sead in Hebrew, meaning to support or sustain. To sustain is to protect and strengthen. It gives the resources needed to keep going. I think of the prophet Elijah after combating the false prophets of Baal. He fled to the wilderness and while being physically and emotionally spent, God sustained him. God gave Elijah what he needed in the way of encouragement while also providing for his physical needs.

I have made you … I will sustain you.

Think of it – the God that created the heavens and the earth, that created you and me, loves us so much He takes interest in our care. Not just in a point of ministry or warfare like Elijah, but throughout life - even to our gray hairs. He knows our weakness and our need. And He sustains us – holds us up - through difficult times. We can rest because God is our sead.

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. Psalm 3:5

Thank you, Lord for sustaining me, even when my eyes are too weak to see it; for holding me up when I feel I can’t go on. Thank you for giving me what I need in the deepest part of my soul so that I can one day behold Your face.

Behold, God is my Helper; the Lord is the sustainer of my life.  Psalm 54:4
