Today is the Jewish holiday of Tisha B’Av. It is a sad day that marks many tragic events of Jewish history, most notably the destruction of the temple. The mourning includes fasting from anything they would consider joyous – marriage celebrations, feasting, bathing, sex and … reading the Torah. Torah study is so identified as a joyous activity that it is actually forbidden on this day.
I remember arriving in Tel Aviv right before a Sabbath and strolling around as dusk descended. Our small group was delighted to pass by a hotel window where we could see the joyous dance of bringing out the Torah scroll. The celebration of kissing the scroll as it made its way through the crowd is a beautiful reminder of love and respect for God’s Law.
Would my heart mourn if I couldn’t study the Bible today? Do I dance at the presence of His Word?
Lord, forgive my complacency and let me never take Your words for granted. You have revealed Yourself in this amazing love letter and shown us how to live. May Your Word be ever in my heart and on my lips.
How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Psalm 119:103
