Into Your hand I commit my spirit. Psalm 31:5
David, in a time of peril and distress, made this declaration to God. The word commit is translated from afkid, which has a connotation of a deposit, like a bank deposit. It is voluntary and can be temporary.
It is this passage from the Psalms that Jesus also cried out as He died on the cross, handing His spirit over to His Father. Here, hold this for Me … for now.
Our Jewish brothers and sisters repeat that phrase from the psalms as part of their nightly prayers - committing their spirit to God, depositing it in His care. And then gratefully reclaiming it again upon wakening in the morning.
God is my safest place, where I can hand Him my very soul and He will guard it for me. He will protect me while I cannot. Someday I won’t need protection. I will be fully in His Presence.
For this reason, I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know Whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day. 2 Timothy 1:12
Have I entrusted God with my soul? Do I live knowing it is safe? What could be safer than the hands of Almighty God. I want to live confident and secure that I have deposited my soul with Someone who will care for it and is able to protect it, no matter the hardships in this life.
My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. John 10:29
