LORD’S PRAYER: AS WE FORGIVE

And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors
. Matthew 6:12

The assumption in this verse is that we have forgiven our debtors. Have we? If I look at my own life, I can find places that I may be hanging on to certain debts. What about as a community? Have we been wronged?

Forgiveness is two-fold. Forgiving others is an indication that we’ve been forgiven. When we understand our own depravity and the merciful gift of forgiveness that Jesus offers, then we have the freedom and confidence to let go of our own hurts and forgive others. But God also says that we should forgive others so that we will be forgiven.

For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14-15

This isn’t referring to our position in Christ. Our forgiveness is a completely unmerited gift that we have done nothing to deserve. But in context this passage seems to be referring to that daily cleansing and sanctification through confession that restores and refreshes our fellowship with a Holy God.

We also restore our relationships with one another through confession and forgiveness. Jesus taught the importance of forgiving others in the parable of the unforgiving servant. God desires unity among His people as we reflect His character. Forgiveness among us is essential. And forgiveness towards the world reveals His work in us as we become like Him.

Lord, forgive us. And help us to forgive others as You have shown us to do.
