“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you." Matthew 28:19
Go therefore and make disciples.
That’s not a request. It’s a direct command. Most of us are of an age where we should have disciples. If we don’t, why not?
What would that look like? Making disciples is difficult and relational. It’s pouring yourself into someone, being transparent so they can be like you (as you are like Jesus), and teaching them what you know.
Let me suggest something. If you have kids – or grandkids – you have disciples. They are going to be like you whether you want them to or not! How do they view God based on what they see in you?
Do we dare say, as Paul did, “be like me”? That’s not arrogance – that’s rabbinic. And it calls us into a godly life of obedience for others as well as ourselves. Talk about accountability!
Jesus didn’t say to go into the world and get people to convert. Or intellectually agree with them. Or even go to church once a week and lead a moral life. He said make disciples. And when those young men heard and obeyed, God used them to change the world.
If our faith is just in our head, then we’re not followers of Jesus. But if we are followers of Him, we are compelled to call others to follow as well.
Let’s make disciples with the radical invitation of God, to love and follow Him with all your heart, soul and mind.
Who are your disciples?
