My Nativity … And Yours

Do you have a nativity crèche that comes out this time of year? I’d love to see a picture. I have two – one has been handed down through the family and the other is an olive wood carving from a trip to Bethlehem. They are both very traditional but neither look much like that Holy night probably did a few thousand years ago.

Francis of Assisi is credited with the first nativity recreation in the 13th century, which is probably why many have a more European flavor than Jewish look. I’ve had an eye out for years to find something more historically or culturally accurate – one that is true. I think there is a lot God was telling us with His arrival in that place.

Today we see nativity scenes reflecting every imaginable culture. A well-travelled friend collects them and posts a different one daily during advent. There is another truth that is revealed through these beautiful and unique pieces. Jesus comes to each of us exactly as we are and where we are. He has come for every nation, tribe and group. I am cautioned not to make Jesus in my image but rather rejoice that He left heaven for my world, too. And I celebrate that He entered in.

If you have a crèche in your home, let it be a reminder that Jesus comes – not only to a strange Bethlehem setting - but right into the middle of where you are. He came to be with you. God with us. Emmanuel.

And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:7
