Perseverance

By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw Him who is invisible. Hebrews 11:27

Perseverance is defined as “doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.” If something hinders my progress, I need to decide if it is worth persevering in. I recently ran an errand and encountered an unusually long line. As I was in a hurry, and there would have been a delay in finishing my objective, I did not persevere but rather decided to run another errand instead.

We need to choose wisely in what objectives deserve our perseverance. When is the goal worth the effort? When we consider following God, we often face difficult circumstances. We also understand there is a delay in our final objective (seeing Him face to face). But He is worth the effort.

If the goal is worthy and we aim to persevere, how are we able to stay the course? The writer of Hebrews said that Moses was able to persevere because he saw God. He was able to see His work, see evidence of His character, even though He is invisible. That’s faith.

I want to persevere in my walk - to continue on despite any difficulties or delay. I will focus on Him and not on the pain of the journey. For on the other side of perseverance, there is peace, for I will find Him there.

Let us strip off every weight that slows us down . . . And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Hebrews 12:1-2
