Wind

Do you see the wind? Really? Can you actually see the wind?

God has given us a beautiful picture of who He is. Ruach, the Hebrew word that is translated wind, is also the same word for air, breath, and even whirlwind. And it is the same word for spirit. Ruach HaKodesh is the Holy Spirit. God manifests Himself often in fire and thunder but also in wind.

Yet we can’t actually see the wind. What we see is the effect of the wind. It sways the trees, blows our hair. The evidence is so clear that sometimes we don’t realize that we actually aren’t seeing the wind. Thus it is with God. The work of His hand, His movement in the world, is sometimes so evident that we “see” Him. He shows Himself to us by His work.

We cannot hope to tame the wind, control it or steer it. Though we may try to hide from it, or close ourselves off from it, we can’t control it. We neither see where it starts – or where its final destination is. But we see and feel its presence around us. This conveys to us something of God.

I love to close my eyes and feel the breeze in my face. And just "feel His presence”. Soak it in. And I ask Him to move in and through me. I realize it’s a picture – but it’s a vivid picture of a reality, a Truth. God in us. God working around us.

Next time you feel the wind – meditate on the picture. Look for God. Look for His work in and around you. You might not see Him – but I bet you’ll be able to recognize His movement.
