And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent. Exodus 14:13-14
The Israelites were ready to run. They were scared and on the verge of giving up. But God reminded them that it was He who brought them there and it was He would do the fighting. They were just to stand and watch God.
Sometimes the obstacles and battles of life seem overwhelming and it can be tempting to withdraw. I’ve been ready to throw in the towel in certain situations, just wanting to disengage and walk away. Yet I’m struck by the number of verses that talk about enduring, standing firm.
Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 1 Corinthians 13:16
Moses had signs and wonders to encourage the people to stand firm. We have the Holy Spirit within us, equipping and strengthening us. We must avail ourselves of this help!
Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Ephesians 6:13
We are to stand firm in our faith, not allowing false teaching or disbelief to creep in. We are to stand firm against sin and the spiritual battles around us. And we are to stand firm against discouragement in difficult and trying situations that would rob us of our joy and faith in His goodness. Hang on to truth.
Sometimes I’m tired and tempted to be discouraged. The enemy may seems overwhelming and I can't see a way out. God says to keep my eyes on Him.
It is often that God calls us to action. But sometimes – just sometimes, it’s enough to just stand firm.
“The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” Watch and see.
