I love to eat. I just enjoy the whole experience - the taste, the savoring, relaxing into the moment and sharing time with friends or family. As I sit at a table with loved ones, our day oozes out until we’ve digested our food, as well as our thoughts and feelings.
In most cultures, to share a meal is a bonding experience. But in Biblical times it carried an even greater weight. It suggested intimacy, even “oneness.” By eating of the same food, we are joined. The picture of intimacy with Christ is described as Him knocking at the door and coming in to dine with us. It’s a beautiful picture. And with communion we are identified with Christ, as well as one another.
I feel more satisfied, both physically and emotionally, after I've shared a meal in community. And, usually, closer and more unified with the people at the table. But this is just a taste, a warm up for things to come. We will all feast together one day. And the Lord will dine with us. And we will experience perfect community and intimacy together with Him.
This is a pattern I want to cultivate. Slow down. Enjoy the meal. Savor it. Savor the people. Bless God. We await a greater feast. And I know that after sharing a meal, we’ve shared much more than the food.
Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. Revelation 3:20
