When you look ahead, whether it’s to a new year, decade or a new day, are you anxious? Or are you hopeful? Our feelings come and go based on what we believe the future may hold. We are influenced by our current situation as well as our past experiences. So let’s hold on to what we know to be true about tomorrow from the scripture.
We can start out acknowledging the obvious - that we don’t know what is ahead of us.
Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth. Proverbs 27:1
But God does.
I am God, and there is none like Me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. Isaiah 46:9-10
Even though we don’t know what tomorrow holds, God has promised to lead us in the right direction.
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you. Psalm 32:8
He will provide for us and protect us along the way.
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:31-33
There is much we won’t understand along the way …
For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9
…but if we are still on our journey here, we can be assured we have a purpose.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10
Ultimately – when there are no more tomorrows for us here - we will be with Him and receive all good things that He has been preparing for us.
Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. 1 John 3:2
… to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you. 1 Peter 1:4
I make preparations for the future, trying to be a good steward of my time and resources - but I need to hold them loosely. Over confidence in my own good plans lacks as much faith as worry over an anticipated situation. My trust belongs to the One who knows tomorrow. I can rest in Him, grateful that it is He who holds the future, loves me and promises to be there with me.
