And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high. Luke 24:49
The disciples, charged with the great commission, were told to wait in Jerusalem until the coming of the Holy Spirit. These are men who had been with Jesus, but they were not to begin their kingdom work until being filled with the Spirit. It would be the Holy Spirit who would lead them and empower them.
I don’t need to wait for the Spirit, He is already working within me. But I do need to wait on the Spirit. Where is it He is leading me? Where is He working, what is His timing, and what is He doing? How would He have me join Him in His work?
Those are questions I must prayerfully consider as I listen for His leading. The only way to know is to be in communion with Him, to learn to recognize His voice.
Waiting sounds passive, but it can actually be quite active. Waiting includes prayer, preparation, and daily obedience. It can even include moving forward in faith as I yield to His hand steering me along to put me in position for His work.
I have my own ideas and goals, but I am reminded to wait on the Spirit. I need not only His direction but His power, without which my efforts are meaningless. It is only through the Spirit that I will reap eternal results as we each, together, join Him in His great and merciful plan.
Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. 1 Corinthians 2:12-13
