Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe. Proverbs 28:26
When I trust in myself, I’m putting myself before God. I’m asserting the plans I have for myself, and how I’m going to accomplish them.
The contrast is to walk with God, the One who made me and loves me. He gives instruction with His Words and guidance by the Spirit. Walking together involves a path. It is not just momentary obedience but on ongoing relationship. Walking in Wisdom is walking with God.
The principle found in this Proverb is true, following God’s way will keep me from making harmful decisions. I will be kept safe. But that doesn’t mean nothing injurious will ever happen to me. While it will likely protect me from risky behaviors, I think the principle goes deeper. Walking in Wisdom protects me spiritually, keeping me from temptation or sin. But most importantly, even while facing bodily danger, I have an assurance of eternal security, the ultimate safe place.
I trust in myself when I try to take control (do I really think I know better than God?) or when I insist on doing it my way. And I trust in myself when I fail to prayerfully consider choices. God has given me experience in a lot of areas but when I neglect to talk to Him as I go through my day, I am trusting myself and am not open to hearing Him nudge me in a different direction.
Lord, let me walk in wisdom. Help me to walk with You daily.
See then that you walk carefully, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16
