Before modern medicine, before ultrasounds, life forming in the womb was a marvel that could only be attributed to the hand of God. It was a mystery.
David sings of this truth in the psalms:
For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Psalm 139:13-15
We can now actually watch that knitting process and it is even more awesome than we could have imagined. Every medical discovery reveals greater complexity of our bodies and our growing knowledge creates more questions than it answers. Even the line between born and not yet born is blurred. With today’s technology we are able to perform life saving surgery while the child is still in the womb.
Science is a wonderful tool in understanding our world. But science exists because we live in a world that was not randomly formed – it has order. It is reliable and so can be studied. True science points us toward the Creator. Life is not demystified by what we’ve learned but reveals more wonder. I’m grateful for a beautifully ordered world and can say to God with the same confidence as the psalmist, “You knit me together.” I was fearfully and wonderfully made. So were you.
Bless God.
