The Bible proclaims that God is worthy, axios in the Greek. Embedded in the word worthy is the word worth, meaning it has weight or value. We use that idea in our daily lives in evaluating the price or cost of something. Is it worth it – either in time or money? Is it worthy?
Why is God worthy?
God is worthy purely based on Who He is.
Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness. Psalm 145:3
He is Almighty, Holy, All Knowing, Loving, and All Powerful.
His character is seen in His acts – like Creation and Redemption - which also show Him to be worthy.
What is God worthy of?
Praise – Who He is, as noted above, causes us to fall before Him in awe. We are His creations and when we realize our true position we offer Him worship in submission to His Majestic Name.
Thanks – For what He has done. Though high and above us He has come down to be with us. He offers life, redemption, provision and comfort. He cares for us.
Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created. Revelation 4:11
Devotion and Obedience – God commands our total dedication in giving Him and Him alone glory and honor. There is no thing or no one more deserving, more worthy, of our time, attention and praise.
So many things compete for my allegiance, resources and attention, including my own desires. But they all fall short and fail to have true and lasting value. God alone is worthy. His value is above all else. I owe Him my all and there is nothing of greater value than His Presence. May I learn to live in this truth.
