We mark Rosh Hashanah at sunset tonight. This is the beginning of the Jewish new year and begins with a trumpet or shofar blast. The "days of awe" begin – as we approach the high holy day of Yom Kippur. This is a time of reflection and repentance in anticipation of the coming judgment. This time of judgment is pictured in Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) and will be fulfilled at the coming of Christ. Listen to the words of our rabbi Jesus:
"They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other." Matthew 24:30-31
So we begin this holiday with the sound of a trumpet - or shofar. And we know the trumpet will sound again one day.
Let’s reflect on the days of the year behind – with repentance for our sins and thanksgiving for our forgiveness and all He has done for us. Let us also think forward to the days ahead – with renewed commitment and thanksgiving for God's faithfulness in being with us whatever may come.
L'shanah tovah [li-shah-NAH toh-VAH]… literally, for a good year!
