Feeling anxious? Consider His Works

I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember Your wonders of old. Psalm 77:11

This sounds like a triumphant celebration of recounting God’s great works. But in context, the psalmist is in a dark place. He is crying out to God, troubled and sleepless.

Where does your mind go when you are anxious or upset? My temptation is to focus on the problem or worries – which is rarely helpful. Instead, the psalmist shows another way.

“Then my spirit made a diligent search …”

And he starts recounting the things God has done. Seems like an odd time to recite history, but it reminds him of God’s character and puts him at ease.

Studying scripture so that I can meditate on His deeds is important. Yet in the dark of night, I can also recount His faithfulness to me and my loved ones. Better than counting sheep - is remembering the Shepherd.

But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for He has been good to me. Psalm 13:5-6
