Delight

Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them. (Psalm 111:2)

What delights you? I can think of many things that bring me pleasure – a beautiful sunset, the laughter of a child, a feast with friends. These are all wonderful gifts from a God who loves us. But we are specifically called to delight in Him and His magnificent works.

To delight is to incline towards, to gain great pleasure, satisfaction and happiness. Is seeing God at work what brings me the greatest pleasure? When I am truly finding delight in Him, I see Him at work more easily. And when I recognize His fingerprints, it causes me to delight. The circle strengthens. I am drawn towards His great works and I dwell on them.

The psalmist says that His works are studied but the word also can mean sought out. Delighting in God’s magnificent hand leads me to meditate on His goodness -so awestruck that I now seek out His work around me, finding treasures of His handiwork if I would but notice.

I want to sit in wonder and gratitude – looking – searching – for the ways God is working around me. I want to see His grandeur and love as I move about my day. He is there. His works are great. And if they truly delight me, I will think on them and let His glory fill my mind and my heart. What better way could there be?

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8
