The Mystery of God

The mystery of God is, well, a mystery. Like many spiritual matters, it is a paradox. The more we learn of Him, the more mysterious He is. It is not merely lack of knowledge that produces the mystery, though our knowledge is quite limited. But it is what we DO know that creates awe and mystery.

Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty? It is higher than heaven—what can you do? Deeper than Sheol—what can you know? Its measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea. Job 11:7-9

We are generally curious people and when faced with lack of understanding or explanation we investigate. Gaining knowledge through study of our world, we seek to demystify what is unknown. In a pursuit to understand God, we explore His text and His world. He chooses to give us glimpses – revealing the mystery of Christ and some understanding of His ways through the Spirit. And we discover the beauty and order of His creation that has been given under our stewardship.

It is good to search out, to learn, to explore – especially if it leads to worship of the Almighty. But at the end of it all, when we have come to the end of our own understanding, we realize He is more. More than we can comprehend, More than we can fathom. And we should dance. Rejoice that our God is bigger and higher and holier than what our minds hold.

He is beyond our understanding, but not beyond our reach. He has come near to those who seek Him. What a mystery. What a beautiful, glorious mystery. Let’s learn and explore and ask as we walk with Him – and embrace the mystery that remains. Bless God!

The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. Psalm 145:18
