A doxology is any short hymn or statement of praise giving God glory. There are many throughout scripture, especially in the Psalms. The word doxology itself doesn’t appear in the Bible but it is made up of two Greek words; Doxa, meaning glory and Logos, meaning word.
For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen. Romans 11:36
The famous hymn stanza, known widely as simply “The Doxology” was written in the 17th century. While not found in scripture, it is consistent with the truths of our text.
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
I grew up in a more liturgical setting than what I experience now. But I find that knowing and reaffirming unifying statements and creeds are helpful reminders of God’s goodness and glory and I miss it. They are especially powerful when stated together as a fellowship of believers.
The Doxology (I can’t read it without hearing the melody) affirms that God is the source of all goodness. It puts our position in perspective as His created, recognizes Him above all else, including the angels and affirms the truth and mystery of the trinity.
If you are unfamiliar with The Doxology, I encourage you to read it daily for a time. Or pick one specifically from scripture. See if it helps point you to bringing God glory, our chief purpose in life. And next time we gather, I’d love to unite in our praise of Him.
Praise the Lord!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty firmament!
Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!
Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
Praise Him with the lute and harp!
Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord! Psalm 150
