The Lord called Moses and spoke to him … Leviticus 1:1
The Hebrew Vayikra is translated as called. It is a personal summons or calling out and its use suggests a loving or affectionate tone. This is the word that God uses during creation as He brings forth order from chaos. Vayikra. And it was so.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. Genesis 1:1-5
God called the light. This is the first use in the Bible of vayikra, appearing in the very first passage of Genesis. The power of the word is evident in creation, but the delight God takes in His handiwork is also communicated. Vayikra is used frequently elsewhere but most notably as the beginning of Leviticus. In fact, Leviticus is named in Hebrew – Vayikra, God called.
The Lord called Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting. Leviticus 1:1
God called Moses, drew him near and spoke to him. He gave him the laws of obedience, worship and essentially how to interact with a holy God. God drew His people back from chaos to order once again. He brought light from the darkness.
God also calls us. He calls us to Himself, to obedience, to service. He brings order from chaos, healing from brokenness. And He will bring light from darkness, first in our own lives but also in those around us.
Vayikra. God’s loving and powerful call. Give me ears to hear.
