Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. Luke 11:34
Sight is used as a metaphor for spiritual perspective or wisdom. We ask God to give us eyes to see and we hope to look at the world as He sees it. But our vision here is not perfect and won’t be until we see Him perfectly face to face.
I’m experiencing some eye issues and have difficulty reading at times. It makes it hard to focus. My mind fills in words that are blurry but on closer inspection (when the sentence doesn’t make sense) I’ve gotten them wrong. I made assumptions based on what I thought was there. I can do the same thing in life. When my spiritual eyes are obstructed with sin or malaise and have lost their focus, I get things wrong. I make assumptions about situations or people that are not true. I lose my focus on Him.
God’s vision is perfect. He sees it all. And regardless of our physical vision, He will give our spiritual eyes sight. I’m hoping to get some resolution and healing soon, but in the meantime I want my blurry eyes to be a reminder to me that it is the Spirit that opens the eyes of my heart. Truth makes things clear, and a changed heart gives us His perspective. Lord, give me eyes to see.
Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. Psalm 119:18
