By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw Him who is invisible. Hebrews 11:27
We all will encounter a decision that causes fear. It may be a situation of standing up for what is right, or having a tough conversation. Maybe it is the prospect of a new relationship, stepping into a new career role or even stepping out of one. How do we move forward in the face of such fear?
Faith puts fear in perspective. It was reasonable for Moses to fear provoking the wrath of a mighty king. But Moses left Egypt anyway. He left, “by faith.” This isn’t a blind leap, overcoming his emotions and rational cautions. Moses took stock of the true situation and made a decision.
Pharaoh had a large and threatening army. But God had revealed Himself to be the all-powerful “I AM.” Moses knew pharaoh, having grown up in the palace. And he knew God, having been introduced at the burning bush. His view of God was so great that any fear of an earthly king was as nothing. It was not because of the amount of faith he mustered, or because he knew the outcome. Moses knew God so he was able to let go of fear.
When I find myself in a position of fear, I need to take stock of my situation. What is it I’m afraid of? And then remember Who God is. When I do that, I don’t need to know the results of moving through the circumstance. I just need to hang on to the character, the power and the glory, of the One I follow. When I focus on Him, fear fades.
When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. Psalm 56:3
