Four Thoughts for Trips, Travel and Vacation – part 2

Whether at home or away, God is at work all around us. He is also at work in and through us. Here are some thoughts on staying engaged in that process while traveling.

See

Traveling gives us a chance to see things with a new perspective. We can see things that otherwise might get overlooked. Pay special attention and watch for:

God’s care

Whether a small traveling mercy or becoming aware of the abundance we experience every day, notice and give thanks.

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 107:1

His Creation – whether you’re in the wilderness beholding nature or in a city full of His children, take time to marvel at God’s creative majesty.

On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate. Psalm 145:5

You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Isaiah 55:12

Kingdom Work

God is at work everywhere. Sometimes we need to step out of our usual routine to notice. You may come across a spontaneous situation to be His hands and feet. Do it!

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works. Hebrews 10:24

Maybe God just wants you to see that He works in unique ways in different cultures. Be open to learn.

He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. Psalm 25:9

Brothers and Sisters

God’s family is big. I love finding brothers and sisters across the globe and feeling that instant connection though we’ve never met before. Seek to encourage the body of Christ; I am confidant you will be equally or more encouraged.

So we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Romans 12:5

Pursue

 Rest and Quiet

Stepping out of normal routines and pressures allow us to turn down the volume. Take some time to be still and hear God. A change of view, venue, or pace can open our eyes, ears and heart to new conversations with God. There may be things on your heart you haven’t had the space to process with Him, let alone yourself.

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! Psalm 139:23

Opportunities for Grace

If you are traveling for pleasure, you have resources unimaginable to many around the world. What a fun adventure to leave large tips, help a local cause or be an anonymous help to a stranger. There is a special joy in giving when it can’t be reciprocated and we leave a place just a little better than we found it.

Don't tell your neighbor, "Maybe some other time," or, "Try me tomorrow," when the money's right there in your pocket.  Proverbs 3:28

Be Ambassadors

We may be anonymous strangers in a crowd, but we are still ambassadors of Christ. We represent Him wherever we go. Bear the name well, serving others with attention to their culture for His sake.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved. 2 Corinthians 10:31-33

Evangelism

And as ambassadors, share Good News everywhere.

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 2 Corinthians 5:20

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Mark 16:15

Hospitality

Hospitality is an attitude. It’s a welcoming gift that makes others feel comfortable with a sense of belonging. You can exhibit hospitality even when you are the guest.

Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Hebrews 13:2

Gratitude

Traveling can help shape our perspective. It can cultivate an attitude of gratitude and humility as well as expand our understanding of what God is doing around the world. Taking a true vacation is a luxury unknown to many. Travel for family, work or a purposeful mission is also a privilege. Let’s make the most of our time away and let God use it to draw us near, teach us and use us in His kingdom.

You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. Deuteronomy 28:6
