The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. Psalm 23:1-2
Having had dogs for many years, I’ve learned to read the body language. They lie down where they feel safe and secure and may roll over exposing their belly when submitting. Sheep, too, will only lie down if feeling safe. In this well known Psalm, David is proclaiming that he feels safe in the Good Shepherd’s care.
A feeling of safety seems unexpected in what feels like an unsafe world right now. David knows what that’s like. He may have written this Psalm while being hunted by Saul. Yet he was able to rest safely because of his relationship with the Shepherd. David was one of the sheep.
Our safety is found in Him, regardless of our physical circumstances. He keeps us safe in sickness - even if He brings us home to Him - because He is the protector of our soul. The Lord watches over our path so that we don’t need to fear evil. Corrie ten Boom felt safe, even in a concentration camp, because she understood she was one of His sheep. Our soul can rest safely in His Presence, whatever form of evil surrounds us.
But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. 2 Thessalonians 3:3
I am grateful for the watchful care of my Shepherd. I can live in confidence, without fear of the battles that engage and surround me. He sends His angels; He covers me and sets me in safety. I like the picture of finding rest, even lying down, in His Presence for my soul is protected in Him.
For He will give His angels charge concerning you, to guard you in all your ways. Psalm 91:11
