El Hanne’eman, the Faithful God

What or who do you rely on? It can be easy for me to put trust in my own planning and abilities or even in friends and family. But however good those things are, ultimately they will let me down. They are not perfect. Not so with God. One of His names is El Hanne’eman, the faithful God.

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. Deuteronomy 7:9

The Lord your God is God, the faithful God – it is who He is at His essence, faithful. At the root of what we translate as faithful is “aman.” This word shows up throughout the Old Testament, always with some idea of security or steadiness. Strong’s concordance says the idea portrays certainty.

God is He who can be relied on. He supports, holds up and steadies. He is secure. A picture from the desert is that of a tent peg placed well and anchoring a tent.

I will drive him like a peg into a firm place; he will become a seat of honor for the house of his father. Isaiah 22:23

The firm place, aman, is rendered secure in another translation.

Life is chaotic in this fallen world. I will stumble and fall. So will others around me. But there is One who is firm, who is secure. I can rely on Him always because His true name is Faithful. He will never let me down and will always fulfill His promises. Always.

If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. 2 Timothy 2:13

  1. “those who love Him & keep His commandments.”...wondering & often perplexed by the message of unconditionally of God’s love in this & numerous other passages. i realize we’re responsible to be responsive to His message but often grace comes across as dependent in us. i fear the seeming paradox feeds legalism. i recognize subsitionary atonement while we were yet sinners & the ‘need’ for faith. that, faith itself is taught & seen in scripture to be from Him so that it’s all His doing. personally i struggle w/ guilt knowing firsthand how often i fail, am not faithful & battle w/ sin & it’s weightiness that are already paid for. it looks like most of His promises are conditional, right? in Dt 7:9 “those who ...”

Sometimes a condition is just a choice that gives you the freedom to participate or not of your own will. There are conditional promises and unconditional blessings/covenant (fullness of life). I may be wrong but God know so let's acknowledge Him in all our ways he will make the path smooth/straight
