Believe in yourself?

Believe in yourself! Knowing myself as I do, and frankly knowing about all of us, I don’t think that’s the best advice. Well-meaning as it is, words matter and if we are not anchored in the truth those words could lead us astray.

We are a very individualistic society. Believing in myself says that I have inside of me what it takes – what it takes to succeed, what it takes to overcome. I think if I exude self-confidence, I am enough.

What a lie.

When I look inward for strength, for wisdom, for capacity, I find a very finite well to draw on. Frequently, the well is not deep enough to satisfy the particular need. But there is One where the well never runs dry. One who has offered all of Himself for us.

If I have to believe in myself, trust in myself to succeed and to thrive, I will be disappointed. I fail or give up and I get distracted from the goal. Not always immediately, but eventually I will let myself down.

Thankfully there is One who will never fail. He is faithful. He is able. He is a sure place to put my trust.

I don’t believe in myself, but I believe in God who enables me. I believe I can do great things; valuable and life changing things, because God works in me.

Believing in myself is a fool’s errand, but with God, nothing is impossible.

I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

Amen! Proverbs 3:5-7 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord and depart from evil. Thanks Jen, for the good reminder.
