MaOn: My Dwelling Place

Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Psalm 90:1

Do you feel restless or unsettled? Or maybe you have actually been uprooted and forced to move around? Moses, who spent his life wandering, knew this feeling well. Our hearts tend to seek a home. It is no accident that in the Psalm credited to Moses (Psalm 90) that God is called MaOn, Dwelling Place.

We often refer to a home as where our loved ones are. That physical address may move, but the space we’ve created with those we cherish us goes with us. It is our dwelling place. In a grander, more awesome way, God is our Dwelling Place. We can live in His Presence and Abide in Him.

MaOn (or Ma’On) refers not only to a place to live but specifically a refuge, a shelter from danger or hardship. For Moses, who had no physical dwelling place of his own, he recognized God as that dwelling place, not just for him but prophetically for us all.

The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms.  Deuteronomy 33:27

God offers Himself. We can live with Him, in Him. Do I? Do I dwell in His Presence? Or merely go there for occasional nourishment or rest?

I am fortunate to have a physical home that offers rest. Yet it is only a picture of what the Spirit creates for me. Whatever my circumstance, wherever I find myself, God is my true Home; the place where I can run to when hardships come. I can drink of the well of Living Water, and because I dwell in His Presence my soul is safe in Him.

For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. Psalm 84:10
