And Moses built an altar and named it ‘The LORD is my Banner. Exodus 17:15
When Moses called God “Jehovah Nissi,” his Banner, the Israelites had just struck down one of their fiercest enemies, the Amalekites. Banners were used by the military and could refer to a flag on a pole or something larger, something easily recognizable. It was a rallying point for those in the fight.
A banner reveals the authority to which they pledge their allegiance. This is the same idea as the arches constructed by the Emperors. To walk under the arch entering the city acknowledged the authority of whose name was on it. Moses said we are under God’s authority.
The banner also reveals the identity of those marching under it. Not only to whom you owe allegiance, but to which kingdom you belong. Moses was saying, “We are God’s people.”
In addition, the banner revealed their unity. When they came together under God’s banner, it is God that gets the win - not Moses, Joshua or any of the soldiers.
I don’t have a banner of my own. God is my banner. I am under His authority and I carry His identity. I do battle alongside others who have also come under His banner. We are united. When I live and move within this world, I don’t represent myself. I represent Him whose banner is over me.
Although God wins the battle, the Israelites didn’t sit on the sidelines – they were in it. The spiritual battles we engage today call us to be on the battlefield. God will receive the glory but we still engage our enemy.
I’m grateful to come under His banner and know that it holds a Mighty Name. It is a rallying point and a symbol of encouragement. Life can be full of struggle and pain. Sometimes I’m tired. But I am under a victorious banner. Jehovah Nissi – the Lord is my banner. Come, join me under His banner as He brings His Kingdom.
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” Matthew 28:18
