Make a joyful noise

Ok, so let’s just get this out right at the beginning – I don’t like to sing. Well, to clarify, I don’t like to sing in front of anybody. I’ll sing in the car or working around home, but in a group I distract even myself. It gives new meaning to a joyful noise.

The Psalms tell us over and over again to sing praises to God. And in the letter of Revelation, we see the saints singing, glorifying God. Singing is clearly a form of worship, but it’s not the only form of worship.

Why is singing such an important act of worship? Can I worship in other ways?

Let’s look at the second question first. Yes, there are many ways to worship God. A life of obedience is a form of worship. Sacrifice, mercy, generosity – all in the name of God - are acts of worship. Even study, as a form of knowing and acknowledging God through His Word, engages our mind and soul in an act of worship.

So, if I’m engaging in all of that, why is it still important to sing?

  • First, and really the only necessary reason, I’m commanded to. Singing is an act of obedience.

Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to His holy name. Psalm 30:4

  • But there are other reasons to sing. Songs of praise tell who God is and proclaim to those around us His great glory. The Psalms, and other scripture, give us reliable truth to declare. In fact, we are speaking His own words to Him in agreement. It is important to test the truth of anything we say, even if it is in song.

God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. John 4:24

  • Singing engages not just our mind, but also our whole body. As an act of worship our spirit, soul and body are unified in praise. It taps the well of emotions and can be a deeply moving experience. The power of our whole being participating can influence us at our core. Once again, a reminder for truth to be the highest priority. Songs that are not true or edifying can also have an impact on our soul.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8

I’m trying to talk myself into singing more. I know I should. I want to sing like no one but God is listening. He’s really my only audience. So if you’re near me at church, ignore the tune. When I get my new body some day it won’t be an issue. But I think I better start practicing now. It’s good for my soul and God deserves His praise.

I live in a rural place. Sometimes I wear my AirPods and sing along to worship and spiritual warfare songs when I garden. I wonder what the birds and deer think of it 😂😂😂. It gets loud.
