Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem and ate continually at the king's table, despite his lameness. 2 Samuel 9:13
The friendship between David and Jonathan is well known, both for its strength as well as its unlikeliness. Jonathan was King Saul’s son, and heir to his throne. But God had given that mantle to David instead. When God ripped the kingdom away from Saul and David conquered the land, Jonathan was among the fallen. Once David was established as king, he sought out any remaining descendants of Jonathan and found only Mephibosheth.
David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” 2 Samuel 9:1
Culture would dictate Mephibosheth’s death to eliminate a rival royal line but David had other plans. He brought the son of Jonathan into his household to eat at his table, thus providing for him the rest of his life. This may be particularly poignant since Mephibosheth was lame from a childhood accident as his nurse fled during the battles.
David had to search for Mephibosheth in order to show him this kindness. Once found, the king chose mercy, not because of Mephibosheth, but solely because of who his father was. And this was not a one-time gesture of good will, but on ongoing state of grace, protection and provision.
There is One from the line of David that has invited me to a feast. A place that I don’t deserve. I am pursued by the King in order to be shown kindness. I am weak, crawling before Him, and yet I’m offered daily grace because of who my Father is. You will find me at His table. I hope you join me there .
But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name. John 1:12
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. 1 John 3:1
